Founded in 1988 by medical students in Ankara, KOMA AMED quickly grew from performing on small stages to becoming the voice of Kurdish youth, achieving cult status in the 1990s. Their debut album, Kulîlka Azadî (1988), blended rebellious new compositions with traditional Kurdish music.

After moving to Istanbul in 1993, they joined the Mesopotamian Cultural Center, the first Kurdish cultural institution. Following years of preparation, they released their third album Dergûs (1997), made up largely of traditional pieces. Dergûs marked a turning point for the group. With new members and a mix of original and traditional works, they later released their album Agir û Mirov (1993). After some group members were forced to leave Turkey, KOMA AMED finally reunited 27 years later.
