The Guardian’s Polly Toynbee and David Walker will be discussing the future of the welfare state with Labour MP Yvette Cooper, Conservative former minister and executive chair of the Resolution Foundation, Lord David Willetts, and social historian David Kynaston.

Toynbee and Walker’s new book Dismembered, a searing critique of the current government, investigates the dismantling of the welfare state and argues how much we need a functioning public sector.

The authors travelled around the country meeting people who make up the state to hear their side of the story. As the UK faces an uncertain future, public healthcare, schools, police, research, welfare, flood protection, as well as grants, rules and transfers are crucial for holding the country together. But how can these services be protected?

While austerity is still very much the focus of the current government, how can the system be reformed to avoid further damaging cuts and rebuild what we have already lost? Join us for this timely and important discussion.
